 OMLA COMPONENT AWARD WINNERS 2011

Each year, the Ohio Middle Level Association recognizes middle level schools across the state demonstrating a commitment to exemplary middle level practices through our Component Award program.  Award plaques will be presented to the winning schools at our annual professional conference.  We are pleased to recognize the following schools with 2011 component awards:

WILEY M.S.  – SERVICE LEARNING
Dr. Octavia Reid, Principal
The Wiley Middle School Student Council conducts service learning projects for the whole student body throughout the school year.  In addition, the student council delegates participate in ongoing service opportunities to help the school and community.  So far this school year, the student council has conducted two school-wide service projects: the Thanksgiving Food Drive, and the Angel Tree Project.  http://www.chuh.org/

HICKSVILLE M.S./H.S. – ADVISORY
Mrs. Sue Dangler, Principal
In the area of advisory, Hicksville Middle School and High School’s Student-Teacher Empowerment Program, or STEP certainly makes for a supportive environment for students in grades 7 through 12.  Students meet in their STEP groups daily and a committee of staff members plans the activities, which are designed to meet the needs of specific grade levels.  The program has changed throughout time to reflect the ongoing assessment and evaluation by the students and staff.  http://www.hicksvilleschools.org/

TEAYS VALLEY WEST M.S.  – TEAMING
Mr. Michael Kauffeld, Principal
Teays Valley West Middle School’s teams meet three times a week to organize and plan activities for their students.  The team is committed to doing what is best for middle level students and is fully supported by the administration.  Teachers support each other to develop a strong curriculum and meet the needs of all students on their team organizing several activities to prepare for the Ohio Achievement Assessment, explore careers, and develop service.   The best part is they genuinely seem to like each other and have fun while creating a positive learning environment!   http://www.tvsd.us

HASTINGS M.S. – SERVICE LEARNING
Mr. Robb Gonda, Principal
Each year, Hastings Middle School’s HOP or Hastings Outreach Program committee plans a service activity that will kick off the next school year along with continual projects.  The service learning project involves students at all three grade levels and students have worked partners such as Alum Creek State Park, Lifecare Alliance, and with the organization behind the Meals on Wheels program.   Service learning becomes an integral part of their instruction and inspires students and staff to develop skills in philanthropy.    http://www.uaschools.org

NORTH ROYALTON M.S. – STUDENT/STAFF RECOGNITION
Mr. Kirk Pavelich, Principal
NRMS has created multiple ways to recognize both students and staff members for outstanding efforts.  The students are recognized through a recognition breakfast for students of the month, a positive behavior system  “The Bear Way”, and Commendation Cards for acts of character. The students also have an opportunity to nominate a staff member for the “Staff Member of the Month.” Teams of teachers are recognized by their peers for outstanding work with being awarded with a “Bear” as their honorary extra team member for the month. NRMS takes that extra step to make sure all students and staff feel recognized for their hard work and dedication.   http://www.northroyaltonsd.org

ERWINE M.S. – SCHEDULING
Mrs. Tina Norris, Principal
Ample time for collaboration, flexibility, time for enrichment and intervention, and a variety of elective choices all make Erwine Middle School’s master schedule responsive to the needs of their students.  The schedule was created with staff input and is reviewed annually to ensure its effectiveness.  Using student data is key to how Erwine uses their time using the Ohio Achievement Assessments and short cycle assessments.  www.conventryschools.org

EDWARDS M.S. – PARENT/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Mr. Kent Morgan, Principal
The Jaguars team at Edwards Middle School in Brunswick has implemented Student Lead Conferences as a way for their students to have more ownership in their learning.  The largest benefit of this has been the increased parent involvement in conferences which has gone from less than 40% to over 80%.  To entice more families, they even offered a free pizza dinner to families with drawings throughout the conference night.  Along with this the team has enhanced their web pages by adding all work done inside the classroom such as presentations and study guides for families to access from home as well as a team email list to remind parents of upcoming assignments.     www.bscoh.org

MAYFIELD M.S. – STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Mr. Paul Destino, Principal
The Building Leadership Team at Mayfield Middle School, in year 4 as a team, has truly taken on all of the staff development at their school.  This team has surveyed the needs of the teachers and from there created a plan which can meet the needs of all.  This year they are using Marzano’s Classroom Instruction that Works as the basis for their staff development.  Since one size does not fit all they offer a variety of ways teachers may participate: Blogs, PLC, Credit Hours, and a book study.  From these the BLT has been able to create a toolbox of samples to assist teachers in implementation.   www.mayfieldschools.org
